Jackson police said a man shot two of his dogs Monday after they attacked a puppy and turned on him when he intervened.
Police would not identify the man because he is not being charged.
Officers found the adult pit bulls alive but suffering from gunshot wounds - one was hit in the back and the other in its side - in the back yard of a house in the 300 block of Southhaven Drive in south Jackson.
An investigator at the scene said it appeared a handgun was used. JPD responded after a resident of Brookwood Estates reported hearing shots.
The owner was not at home when police arrived.
According to Hinds County land roll records, the house is owned by MARCHETA DAVIS, who could not be reached for comment.
Animal control officers were called out to remove the dogs. Jackson Police Department spokesman Joseph Daughtry said the dogs will be euthanized.
